Default Change Oil Filter Housing Gasket

I have a 2001 F150 SuperCrew 4x4 with the 5.4 in it. I have a good size oil leak coming from the gasket where that housing meets the engine. Has anyone ever changed one? I've been told that you have to remove or move the front 4x4 diff to access it, but that doesnt seem right to me. Thanks in advance for your help!

have not been within 3 feet of the filter base on my 01 2x4 ot know if there is a gasket on it. but i know there is a gasket on the filter itself. is it possible that a gasket from a filter has come off and is causing the leak???

Hey, I have an 04 F-150 4x4 with the 5.4L V8. Lariat trim level and 149K miles, if it's needed. My truck has the common oil leak from the filter adapter gasket. I started doing this this gasket swap over the weekend and made like hardly any progress because I couldn't figure out how to gain access to the gasket. It looked soooo much EASIER on youtube videos, lol!! I did manage to drain the coolant and oil, though. Anyway, I figured out it's so much more difficult because my truck is 4x4. I thought about throwing in the towel and asking a shop to do it, but now I have a truck in the driveway without coolant or oil in it, so I'm also inclined to see if I can see it through.

For those who have done this repair on an 04+ 5.4L 4x4, could you please provide information that may be helpful? I'm looking for a write up if it's available, or better yet a video. At the very least what I'd like to know is a short description of the items that need to be removed to gain access. I saw in a previous write up that the front left axle shaft needs to be removed, but hoping for confirmation that that's the easiest way to go. Also have seen that some people remove the power steering pump.

Any help would be appreciated because I need my truck!!! :-D

Hi William, I have an update for you. Some good, encouraging info and some not so good info.

Good info first...I WAS able to get the gasket back in place even without taking the 4x4 pumpkin off or either one of the axles. It's simply a matter of using the right combination of extensions, wobble extensions and universal joints. So with enough patience and tool combinations, you'll get it back on.

That being said, the stinkin gasket had been replaced, but it still leaks! 😫 I think I must not have cleaned the surface enough, or maybe I overtightened/undertightened a fastener. I'm pretty confident in the diagnosis and the basic process for the swap. Evidently something went wrong in the attempted repair tho.

At this point I need the truck working and reliable so I'm throwing in the towel and taking it somewhere to be fixed. When you get to the point where you're reassembling, pay close attention to the mating surfaces and tightness of the fasteners.
