Catalytic Converter - Expensive!!!
I just bought a 2002 XLT V6 4.2L with 140,000 for $1500 thinking I got a great deal. Truck runs great, interior in excellent condition. A/C even works. Body has some rust but I can live with that for a 3rd vehicle/work truck. Anyway, I knew the exhaust had a leak. No big deal right? I can replace any exhaust component pretty cheap. Yeah right!!!
$1200 for a Cat??? Really? I must be looking in the wrong places. Any suggestions? We have e-Check in Ohio so I dont think I can cut it out. There is no visual inspection any longer so maybe I can? I need the O2 sensors to report correctly as a check engine light will cause it to fail e-check.
Anyway, any thoughts appreciated. Junk yards seem to be selling for cheap?

Yeah, I dont know what I was thinking. I usually try to go through OEM reseller but for this vehicle, any part that can get the job done would be sufficient. Thanks for waking me up!
$420 for a direct fit is way better!

Just delete the cats? Why do you want to keep them? Either gut them (if you still have visual) or do the gotts 02 mod if you delete them and get a code. Browningscrew did the write up for it

Where in Ohio has e-check??? I have lived in Ohio my entire life and have never heard such a thing
Anyway, if you feel the need to have cats, just get universals and call it a day...

I was under the impression that Universals need modification and I cant just bolt it in. I dont want to spend any time with customizations to make it work.
I see Rock Auto has them for $260. Price is getting better! I forgot about Rockauto.. I used them all the time when I had an older BMW.
eCheck... There are automated stations where you plug in the computer and get the printout yourself (in cuyahoga anyway).. no supervision... no mirror. I however wouldnt want to delete my Cats for fear of O2 not working correctly, check engine light.. failed e-check = even more $$$ to fix. BTW - if you spend $300 on repairs, you get an automatic pass.
