The control module has detected some sort of problem and set a trouble code. You'll need to get someone to pull the code to find out what is going on.

Default Similar Case

I had the same problem with my truck. Mine was due to a leaky windshield and water getting into my GEM shorting a circuit. Once dry, I the problem quits and the light stays off. My light would blink, but wouldn't engage anything to mess with my truck. Might try blow drying the fuse box area for a while to see if that works. The GEM piggy backs onto the back of the fuse box. Look for rust stains around the pedals to see if this might be the reason.

My '97 does it and no codes pop up nor can I pull any I have an OTC Genesis scan tool and I can't get anything. I talked to Ford and they said it was just a problem they had with them. The guy I talked to told me to replace the speed sensor and if that don't do it then you just have to put up with it. Nothing else black tape will fix the problem.

I have an 87 F150 that I recently purchased and just today my overdrive off light on shifter started blinking and odometer is not functioning, along with no overdrive of course. Took it to local shop and it ran 3 codes, 539, 124, 452. Tried to look up codes and they only goto 100......LOL. Transmission guy is out of town so I quess I will drive it like it is until he returns. If I had to guess I would say it is a solinoid in the transmission or something actually in the shifter that has to be replaced.

Of course by my V.I.N. the truck came out with a 6 cylinder and now it has a 5.0 the overdrive worked great and had no problems for the first 2 months i had the truck, so maybe it is something simple.

Default Trouble or delay Shifting

I have a 99 extended cab, 4x4, with trailer package (XLT) 5.4L Triton
I have had my OD light flicker too, but It went away on it's own.
Now I have trouble or a delay shifting. I have been under the hood, replacing old vacuum hoses and stuff and I think I may have unplugged something.
Right now in the lower gears when I take off I have to let my foot off of the gas for it to shift up. And if I am on the freeway and put my foot into it it goes way down in the gears and the engine races to high rpm until I let my foot off. I do not want to go to a shop to just plug something back in if I could. Anyone know what this may be? For the most part this tranny seems tip top.
