Battery light?
Hey all...
I just got in my truck and started it just fine. I noticed that the battery light was on. I also noticed that the "voltage guage" was reading normal (half way between + and-). No interior lights were left on and everything functioned normally. It stayed on for about 10 minutes and then went off. Any idea what could cause it?

1998 f150, 5.4, Lariat power everything. 160,000 miles......
Took it to VIP and the battery and Alt test came back GOOD?
But sitting at idle in the driveway, it starts to flash the battery light after driving it back home? When I push on the gas, ity goes away, and the Alt Gage reads half way way in the good?
Maybe Alt gets weak after it warms up??

Quite possibly could be a diode is out on the Alternator. It will cause the Battery light to flash randomly. My Sable does the same thing and I finally figured out it was a shot diode on the alternator which meant to fix I had to replace the alternator. Decided I'd let it run until it died and it's been that way for over a year now and still running strong.

I know this isn't really the same thing, but I had a similar issue in my '78 F-150. The alt light would flash unless I turned the lights on, or the heater, or something else that would draw some juice.
Turned out to be the voltage regulator, changed that and it was fine afterwards.

OK, after 2 alternator/battery tests that came back good, nothing wrong with either? I took out the alternator today. Pretty easy on this 5.4.
After removing the Voltage Regulator/Brush Assy, I could see that the Armature Slip Rings (What the brushes touch) where worn and the second ring had a couple small holes. So 150 bucks at Napa, for a rebuilt 130 amp. That flicking battery light is now gone

hey this happened to me last week, my battery light came on but my gauge stayed normal so i was driving to the shop about 30 min. away. when i was 10 min. away the gauge dropped fast all the way to 0, then everything shut down i made it to the shop but there was only 6.3 volts on my battery (the engine needs 6 volts to run) my alternator had died. Morale of the story: don't wait two long to get it checked out.
