Ball Joint
I have a back yard man doing the work on my truck ,, 2000 f150 4.2 L, he tells me i need a ball joint, ( upper passenger side ) but i have to get a control arm at the same time as they (he thinks) are attached . He told me the price of the part would be around $500, ouch , is he correct ? I seen vidio on you tube it dose not seem like a long job so I'm not to woried about the labour,... $500 bucks !!!

I haven't done it on an F-150 but I have done that on a Crown Vic. At first, I thought I needed a upper control arm as well as when I tried to seperate them, I couldn't get it apart. But when I took it in to have done professionally, they were able to get them apart and just replace the ball joint which saved me considerable money. Only one hour of labor and part was I think, $40 bucks? So yeah, I'd get a 2nd opinion unless the guys here who HAVE done it on the F-150's know for a fact they can't be seperated.

You will have to get it all as 1 piece. The price is high, I would say more than double what it should be. Check this out [I use them all the time] http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/se...5601+1616+9197
Before doing anything, jack the truck up one the problem side and grab the tire at the top and bottom. Shake the tire in and out to see if it has excessive play or even knocking on the top.

Upper Ball Joint
My 97 needed a lower ball joint so we did both upper and lower. The upper comes with the control arm I believe they call it that, but it wasn't that expensive, seemed like it was about 48.00 or so with a lifetime warranty.
Did all four ***** joints and one tie rod end and the mechanic charged about
300.00 for everything. So yes get a second estimate on that F-150, mine
is 97 f-150 4x4 4.6L Engine

I just did all four ball joints for if i remember right, Under 250 dollars. Its a very easy job if you get the right tools. All you need are some basic hand tools, and then the bearing puller and press, which comes as a kit for the lowers. I rented mine from an Advanced Auto Parts store. You do have to change the upper control arms too. My A arms came with the ball joints pressed in already. And some might tell you that you need a caster camber kit, but two of the alignment shops in town told me i dont need one. Just make sure you get it aligned after. Unless hes charging you 100 bucks an hour it shouldnt come close to 500. I had never done ball joints and i did mine within 2 hours.

yea I was told that too, but you know, if you have even some mechanical ability, its a pretty easy job. I just dont trust someone else working on my truck. But since i dont have an alignment machine i have to take it in for that.
