Question axle code

a question for those in the know....

I have an axle code of 27 on the door sticker of my 03 SCab and am trying to figure out what size axle I have if I want to put in a truetrac differential.

I do know that it's a 3.31 ratio openaxle but i'm not sure if it's an 8.8" , 9" or what # of splines.

If the rear is going out is a truetrac a "plug and play" type of install? ie; yank the blown ring and pinion and swap in the new hardware, or will I be looking for another axle assembly?

I'm ultimatly going for a limited slip on the rear axle. The 4wd gets used on occasion but not for any radical off road activity, mostly just northern Minnesota winter driving.

thanks!

Joe

hey Joe...if the rear cover has 10 bolts, it's a 8.8...12 bolts is a 9.75. the 9.75 came standard on the v8's i think around 98. the 9" has not been used on trucks for along time..i think the last year was around 86. i know my 87 f150 had the 8.8. can't help with the rest of your question...sorry.

A Truetrac is an easy install "IF" you're keeping the stock gears (pinion and ring). If you have to replace the ring and pinion, that's basically a complete rebuild. It is NOT a differential that installs into your existing carrier.

Swapping out a regular diff for a Truetrac is a matter of just changing your ring gear over to the truetrac, and checking backlash. But as soon as you bring the pinion gear into play, the job becomes much more complex.

Also, keep in mind that gears need to be changed in sets. You can't change a ring "OR" a pinion. They come together, and need to be a matched set. In other words, if you ring gear is bad, you require a total rebuild, but in the process you can add any differential you want.

Also, I believe your truck was available with the 10.25" axle too, but I doubt you'd have 3.31's in that.

thanks folks!

I get a bit of noise back there now but nothing that causes me to think it's failure is imminent. but if I were to need to go into the diff......
