Hi guys I was looking for some tips on frost plug removal so I can install a block heater. Did a little searching and couldn't find any conclusive info. What's the best way to get it out without getting metal filings in my cooling system? Also I've heard there are more than one plug, should I remove a certain one and lastly do I drain the system first and how much antifreeze will it take to refill? I bought 2 gallons.

You mean Freeze plug in the side of the block ??

If it is a cup type plug just knock it in to the block then turn it side ways and pull it out with a pair of pliers. if it is welch type plug drill a small hole put in sheet metal screw and pull it out. Yes you should drain system and yes you will spill any coolant left in the block. Pick a plug midway on either side that is easy to access. If you are using concentrate mix it 50/50 with DISTILLED water and 2 gallons is more than enough, if you are using pre diluted you might need a little more.

^^^ his method seems to make sense. I've never had to remove or change the freeze plugs. But i'd be a bit nervous about loosing the plug inside the block and subsequently having it obstruct the water flow or something silly. I'm not even sure if that's possible, but just food for thought.

IMO you can always look into the oil pan heaters too. I've never messed with either but just talking aloud. Do you live in Canada or Alaska or something?
