Chaning out a U-Joint is easy. After the first couple of times it takes 15min. Theres four bolts on the rear of the driveshaft, pop them out. Slide the driveshaft out. Clamp it in a bench vise. Get a pair of needle nose and pull the four pins out then just work the U-Joint out. Take the caps off the old, slide the U-Joint in, and then put the caps on with a hammer(GENTLY) until you can get the new pins to slide in the grooves on the dshaft. MAKE SURE THE PINS ARE IN THE GROOVES. And then once you do that rebolt up with anti-seeze on the bolts. Done, just go slow the first time. And you may want to buy another and do the other u-joint.

Just to let you know 9 times outa 10 its a pita. Took me and my bro 3 hours to do mine and we've both done then before. The best way to do it is to find somebody with a press to press them out and press the new ones in.
It helps to save your fingers... I got my thumb with a 3lb maul and damn was there alot of swear words said not to mention a broken thumb.

I would point finders at the u joints right away...
But in these trucks with drum brakes (all 97-03 had drum brakes in the rear, e-brake or primary) they are known to let springs go, or hold down pins, even shoes delaminating, adjuster cable etc ...
Check u joints, rear drums, u bolts wheel bearings...
Although bearings usually growl and not click check em anyway

Changing a u joint is simple... It will probably take you two hours for one joint if you haven't done it before, if you learn the right way, it will take under 10 min for every joint after that
I don't care who you are, if you do it the right way it is easy on any u joint, even rusted frozen joints...
I just broke down and installed a u joint that probably hadn't been changed since the '70's and it was changed in under 10 minutes from gettin the axle out to puttin it back in...
A bench vice, hammer, punch, a 3/4 socket for your rear 1350's, needle nose pliers and done
