Default '97 steer gear replacement

I've a GREAT 97/5.4 with 240K mi. Replaced alt, 4 coil packs, 2 radiators along the way. Steering is stiff and won't self-correct after a turn either direction. No leaks but could it be a worn out box? Is $140 for a reman good? Should I attempt myself?

Very good chance it's the box. Gears are worn in a certain spot and dont like to move. It could also be that your caster is off. Maybe even both. Normally steering boxes leak alot if they are bad. Not sure on the price but doesn't sound bad.
