Default 97 F150 won't shift out of second.

I bought a 97 F150 4.6l 4x4. It was running fine, no slipping, no noises. Now it won't shift out of second gear. I have been told the entire transmission needs to be rebuilt. I've also been told it may be a shift solenoid. Any suggestions or advice would be welcome.

Default Stick on a Scanner:

Run a scan and see if any error codes are generated.
If you don't have a scanner, get one....Equus/Innova 3030 is an inexpensive one that should turn the trick.

2nd gear is a good clue for "limp mode." Mine was stuck in limp mode last summer and would start of in 2nd gear, then shift to fourth at 4500 rpm, completely skipping third gear. Overdrive would then be sensitive, coming in and out sparatically(sp).

try disconnecting the battery and leaving it un-hooked long enough for the computer to do reset, may do the trick, its free, worth a shot lol

Pick you up a chiltons. Manual and it will show you. $25 at any respectable parts store. If its a valve body issue it can be corrected without a total rebuild. Also check your fuses! I've seen crazy things happen over a blown fuse!
