Default Is the 97 check engine a bulb?

I have a 97 with 140K miles. It is starting to nickel & dime me. It failed inspection because the check engine light does not come on. Before I start rooting around is it lit by a bulb, or is it some type of diode on an unmarked fuse?

That's what happens when you forget to feed him. He may just be sleeping though so when you pull the dash apart to change the bulb wake him up and give him a snack. Can't remember the part no. for that bulb (194 sounds familiar), but you have to take the dash cluster out in order to do it and when your in there you might as well change them all because it is a pita. If you need help let us know. My 97 has been nickel & diming me as well.
