97 to 99+ 4.6 Swap
Everything I can find seems to be people doing 4.6 to 5.4. And it sounds like too much work.
I have 97 f150 with 4.6 and It's in the shop right now with oil-pressure issues.
My question is this:
If I get a 99 4.6 is it a "drop-in" replacement for the 97-98 4.6?
I figure If I gotta replace the engine it would be nice to put a better motor in especially since the price difference seems negligible.

a 1997 f150 4.6 engine is the same in almost every way up to 2003
then only difference is that after 1999 they started to use PI heads which gave some extra HP if you wanted to swap out only the heads from you current non PI heads to the PI heads you would need to change the heads and the intake manifold, you would still be able to use the same throttle body and valve covers and I am pretty sure that would be it.
but to answer your question yes a '99 4.6 would drop into your '97
ps the engine is the same from '97-'03 for the 4.6, and the 5.4 too.
PI = power/performance improved

im pretty sure its not all the same. i have a 97 4.6 and you have spark plug wire on 97 98 4.6. they started putting cops on the newer motors so you might have to change the wiring harness and computer. but then it should all just bolt in

also I am going to do a swap to a 2002 f150 5.4l lightning engine and I can use the coil packs(actually better than cops) all I have to do is fab a bracket for the driver side and get a tune, to tune the computer to the 5.4l supercharged from the 4.6, and a few other things to a couple of the sensors and of course a stronger transmission
