Keystone Cougar makes several 5th wheel campers that are half ton rated. We're looking at a used 26'. I have the FX4 package with heavy duty shocks.

The problem has nothing to due with it being a half ton. Bigest problem would be the amount of overhang on the trailer and possible contact with the cab when turning.

I understand the overhang but that's not a problem. The companion slide hitch made for the short bed takes care of that issue. Also the Keystone cougar we're looking at has tapered corners up front for additional clearance. I'm just trying to find out it anyone here has installed the hitch themselves and if so is it pretty straight forward.

The smallest, lightest fifth wheel that Winnebago makes has a dry weight that exceeds my towing capacity. The problem is that nobody tows an empty trailer, so you're quickly well above. In an accident, guess who has an instant liability problem? I drive a 43 ft diesel motorhome and see hundreds of fifth wheel RVs. None are being towed by half tons.

Your not looking close enough. While I agree you don't see older 150s pulling 5ers, I've seen plenty of the newer one doing it. There are plenty of new fifth wheels half ton rated when the truck is ordered properly equipped.

Thats what I was thinking. Like I said, my Father in law towed his 5th wheel with his '04 F150, and I see them all the time and I am not even looking.

A Toyota can pull the space shuttle. The 2004 can pull more than we can. In this case, it isn't a question of whether it can. It is a question of whether the OP wants to be "that guy". It's a personal choice.

Not arguing the liability or safety of it, but I see 1/2 ton trucks pulling 5th wheels all the time. I questioned my father in law about it and his excuse is they don't pull it very far (usually < 50 miles).
