5.4L head gasket
I was quoted today for replacing my passenger side head gasket for $1400. I noticed an oil leak on my truck and had it checked out by a local ford dealer. Is that a reasonable price for this job? Also i was wondering if it is a serious problem and if i need to get it replaced right away. It seams to be loosing 2 quarts of oil per 3000 miles. Would it be ok if i keep the oil level up until I can save up the green to replace it?
My truck is an 03 with a 5.4 and 4wd if that has anything to do with the problem.

Sources inform me that oil can collect in the valley area under the intake due to head gaskets, if this sounds like yours, you can suck the oil out of this area to prolong the repair untill time is better, (money or weather.)

Sounds like alot of $$$ to replace 1 head gasket...I would shop around...or ask how much the labor rate is and what the book calls for hours to complete.

2 qt. every 3000 is not that big of a deal. Have you tried replacing your PCV valve? $1,500 is alot of money. I would just deal with putting oil in it every 500 miles.

My same thoughts....wouldn't your oil level be RISING because of the coolant mixing in with it? He's right, definitely check the valve cover gasket or even the intake gasket before you let anyone touch your truck. They'll replace your head gasket, then you'll run into the 'might as well get a new intake/valve cover gasket while we're in there' scenario.

Never heard of head gasket causing oil leak - run, run , run. I would bet on valve cover. The leak will get worse over time but unless you are worried about oil on the driveway I would put ity off.

This is one of the spots i found for the 5.4l head gaskets to leak oil and not mix with anti freeze. Has anyone else had this problem? http://www.ford-trucks.com/tsb/fullt...php?tsb=03-6-2

Actually Bryan, that seem to be a good price. I checked 3 dealers here and I got $1600, $2000, and $2200. Mine has beenleaking for about a year. Just keep adding oil.
