I personally wouldn't stray from Motorcraft on the DPFE sensor.

I agree. Aftermarket may work for a while, but in the long run it is cheaper to just get Motorcraft.
I personally use a lot of aftermarket stuff, but for the emissions and sensors and such on these trucks, Motorcraft just works.

For the older trucks, the aluminum DPFE's work best, but hard to find. A company called TOMCO use to sell them...Motorcraft only.
Per Ford Motor, -
Two different sensors are in use, one metal cased and the other plastic. These sensors should not be interchanged - further, some sensors have a modified voltage output.

That's what I thought as well. But Tomco carries nothing but top line stuff and at the time, the dealer couldn't get me the correct DPFE. I noticed with Tomco, they are usually well stocked and the go-to in these situations. They aren't too well known as they don't advertise much. That's been my experience with them anyway.

I hang on the interwebs with my pals like you.
FWIW, Mine has had a plastic one on it for about 4 years now, with no issues. When I was having my issue, I searched around and saw that most, even Motorcraft, are switching to plastic. My Buddy actually sent me an aluminum one, brand new by Ford Parts, that I've just been keeping around. Plus, I am 99.9% sure there is nothing wrong with my original that I still have.
