4x4 problems
Today it was snowing so i tried to put my truck in 4x4 but it didn't work... instead i go thru my whole neighborhood sideways But i feel like a dumb a** cuz my truck says 4x4 on the back and i can't make it up some of the hills. So what happens is i'll shift the floor shifter in 4H and it doesn't do anything (doesn't engage or even show up on the dash) then i try 4L and it goes into the low part of 4L put it won't actually engage the front wheels....Could it be some type of selenoid or something?

I'm guess I'm having the same problem, could barely get out of the driveway just now.
I'm wondering if the GEM under the dash actuates the front hubs to lock in?
I've just started looking into it, have you made any progress?

on my truck, i would try to shift into 4wd and nothing would happen. i finally got it to shift into low range but the front wheels were not engaged. i couldnt get it out of this. i had to take off the shift motor and shift it with a wrench. it turns out that the GEM was bad. im sure that probably your problem too

I am also having problems with my 4 wheel drive when you engage the switch to 4h you can hear the transfer case engage but the front diff does not lock in can you manually push the shift lever on the front diff into place?

The GEM is piggybacked on the fuse panel under the dash by the parking brake. The leaky windshield spews on it and fries the GEM and usually the fuse panel as well. It controls all sorts of things, apparently including the front hub actuators.
I'm wondering if I can't just bypass the GEM with a bit of creative wiring and actuate the hubs with a switch.

well, i know for my truck, the gem also controls the turn signals and a few other things so you would probably spend more time and effort trying to make those work than you would just replacing the gem. it really isnt that hard to replace at all. once i figured it out, it only took me maybe a half hour to to it from start to finish (i had to do it a few times because they gave me one for a standard trans., manual t-case, while mine is auto with electronic t-case)
if you would like, i have some pics from when i did mine that i posted on another forum, i can post them up here if you would like to see how easy it really is. if you can do like i did and get one from a junkyard (if they guarentee it) it can save you a lot of money.
