What kind of shift is it - manual T-case or elec. ? I had a problem with an 05 F150 with elec. shift doing that last winter, the light finally went out after the weather let up and I haven't messed with it since.

If you have an electric shift transfer case, you will need to check at the t/case the motor. They can go bad like anything electric. I've seen them work, and not engage, due to broken gears. If you have power and no motor whine, then you most likely have a bad motor. If you have a lever type tcase, then it has to be internal or bad linkage. I'm betting you have electric. Check at the motor on the tcase first. Good luck

T-case motor is probably it. I replaced mine on my 03 and it broke when it was in 4 low it sucked plus the motor was 328 buck.

How much did you pay for the motor and how long did it take to replace it? I was towing my 19' camp trailer, was backing thru sand so I locked her in. Went in fine, when I was done turned it back to 2H and it stayed engaged in 4L. Could the motor be related to this??

Yes it can.

I would first try and shift the transmission to neutral and try and disengage the t/case then. Some of the Fords (I don't know why) only will disengage in the neutral condition after running in 4x for some distances. I found the same thing with the Explorers. It has to go into neutral to remove from 4high. Not in auto 4, but with 4 high only. I'd try that and see if it will disengage, if not, you can pull the few screws holding the t/case motor, and you can shift it manually back to 4 high until you can get a motor. They run anywhere from 40-150. Depends where you are, you're auto suppliers, and if there is a used avail. I put a used on the other day for 25 on the 03 KR I just bought. Right place, right time? Good luck
