4R70W Trans Options

4R70W Trans Options
I have an '03 F150 w the V6 engine.
Trans reverse went out.
The truck has a gazillion miles on it!
I'm looking for an inexpensive fix.
Can I install a used trans from a CrownVic or Mustang (or any other vehicle that uses the 4R70W)?
OR can I only use a 4R70W from either an F150, F250, Econoline 150 250 350, or Explorer?
What are my options?

If fluid is not burnt and there are no sign of contamination on the pan the problem is in the valve body or servo. It can easily be repair without removing the transmission.

That would be GREAT if it is something that simple (& relatively inexpensive)! :-)
I will check the fluid & the pan. (...fingers crossed!!)
Thanks!! (y)

w0lvez, is the 4.2 the same bell housing pattern as the 4.6/5.4?

Thanks w0lvez. That's what I was thinking, but didn't want to say without knowing for sure. The Mustang had the 4.2 for one year, and it had a 4R70W in it.... Also, the 3.8/4.2 pattern is only one bolt off from the SBF.
So really, his only options for used are a 98-04 3.8 Mustang, or an 98-03 4.2 F150.
FYI OP.... You can not use the 97 trans unless you repin the trans harness.

The 4.2 has the same bell housing as the 5.0/5.8 windsor and the 300 6.
To the OP. Measure the length of the overall trans from bell housing to the tail end. There are a couple different lengths of tail shaft and without ripping the trans apart to replace it, it is best to get the correct length unit. 4x4 have the same length main body and bell housing, with a common tailshaft length.
