I have a 1997 4.6L with a little miss , I put new ford plugs,new ford racing 9mm wires, new air filter,new gas filter, cleaned my mass air flow sensor and I still have a little miss.what could be wrong??????HELP

Could be a coil pak problem. Without using a scanner and going into mode6 to view the misfire monitors you can't tell unless the check engine light is on telling what cylinder is giving you the problem. Also could be a injector.

I do not have coil packs. do you mean a bad injector or just dirty?

You have 2 coil packs. Each pack runs 4 cylinders. I would take the truck to a shop that has a NEW Snap-On scanner. That is the only one I know on the market right now that has a Ford misfire counter. I could be wrong I haven't bought a scanner in 2 years.

Sorry, I did not know they are called coil packs also...I thought the coil over plugs were only coil packs...now that you say mention coils I was looking at the coil pack on the drivers side and you know your little wire harnness that plugs in to it , well one of the red wires had the insulation melted off about a inch long. I just put some black tape over it ..is this a sign of something wrong. I bought the truck a few weeks ago and I thought maybe somebody was probing at the wire for a remote start or something and damaged the insulation then it melted a little.If I change coil pack should I put ford coils back on or go with aftermarket coils...thanks for your info man.

I just read that aftermarket coils do not like platium plugs there is a not enough resistence ,they call for a copper core...is this true????if so if I need to replace a coil I have to replace with a ford one because I just put in 8 new ford platiums....any info guys..thanks..Calvin

Hi,
I'm new here, and have the same sort of trouble as you Calvin.
I have a 2002 f-150 4 x 4, 4.6L Romeo engine. All the plugs have been changed, the injectors checked out, and I have no OBDII codes that show up, still I get an erratic missfire. It gets worse when it is warmed up. The fuel presure is 30 to 35lbs when driving down the road and no blips show up on the guages during missfires. I have a scanner that tells me of missfires as I'm driving, the missfires are random on the cylinders, never the same cyl. Compression and leak down have been tested on all cylinders, and all is even. I got a tip from a Ford mechanic that it could be the EGR regulator, so I replaced it and the results are the same, erratic missfire. Anybody else have the same problem and fixed it ?

I still have not found my now again miss,I cleaned the throttle body and I thought I had it but the damn thing is still there,it is not that bad of a miss or does not happen all the time but it drives me crazy,my mechanic told me its just in my head but he just knows it will be a bitch to find,I have a small crack in a manifold and I am wondering if there is anyway it could be taking in air.well keep me posted if anyone finds anything out and I will do the same.calvin
