Default 4.2 to 5.4 swap

So here is the story

I have a 2002 f150 with the 4.2 auto tranny and towing package 170,000 miles. For what it is this little motor does really well pulling my boat. My boat is 27' long and im sure upwards of 6000 lbs. So needless to say it may "pull it" but I need more power.

I just happen to have a 1999 f250 (light duty) setting at my house. I bought the truck with a blown motor and recently pulled the blown motor out. I then picked up a 2001 used 5.4 and had planned on swapping out and using the truck to pull my boat while keeping the other as an every day driver.

Well after considering things I just dont want to have an extra truck at my house. Between my boat, my truck, and my roommates truck I just dont have the room. I looked into buying a new truck with the 5.4 to pull my boat and ditching the 02 but am not about to flop out 25k for a new truck.

So then the little hampster in my head started running and I came up with the idea of swapping the 4.2 in my 2002 for the 2001 5.4. I already have the 1999 f250 (LD) setting there so getting the harness etc should be fairly easy. I even have the tranny out of that truck to use.

Does this sound like a nutty idea. how hard of a swap would it be?

What was in the 99? 4.6 or 5.4? You will need the transmission from a Modular engine as the V6 transmission will not bolt up to the 5.4. I can tell more once these questions are answered.

The donor truck had a 5.4 with an auto tranny. So I have both of those and the wiring harness to each.

whats your recommendation

Use the 1999 5.4 PCM, engine and transmission harness. Does the 1999 have PATS keys? Does the 1999 instrument cluster have a tach?
