Installed the 285/70/17 BFGs this week. Decided not to crank the t bars because I just really like how it looks right now. Should have come like this from the factory. A before/after pic (happened to take both when I was at the gym haha):

Hey guys, I just came across a set of 315/75/16's locally with decent tread for a really good price. Nankang Mudstars. I've read good and bad reviews, so I have a pretty good idea of the tires reputation... but @ $200 for all four and good tread, it's hard to pass up. But I have the same problem as a lot of guys looking at 35's - I'm still on stock gearing. My truck is a 3.55 open 8.8 with a 4.6. So I figure these will probably suck, except for one thing: I have a 5 speed.

So what do you all think? Can a 3.55/4.6 truck get away with 35's shifting? Any better or worse than the auto? The M5OD has a 3.90 first gear, vs a 2.84 first gear in the 4r70. Given the same final drive, the 5 speed should be able to turn more tire, right? Or am I missing something in the auto trans?

Thanks for reading!

I ran those for more than 30k and they are still going on my black truck. Keep them rotated and they will do just fine.

You will be doing better with the 5-speed on takeoff but you will be shifting out of od on any extended climb up a grade just like the auto.

I am on 35's with 3.55's and a 4.6L auto, I don't have a big problem with the acceleration. Yeah, it's slower than my old 33's, but my truck isn't meant to be a race car. I think you would have it a lot easier in a manual because I often find myself trying to get the truck to shift into third when going up bigger hills at higher speeds and things like that.

I can't tell you how fast off the line you will be in a manual, but I am going out on a limb and saying general driving on 35's would probably be a lot easier. At only 200 bucks I'd pick them up and put them on the truck to see how it rides, if you don't like it then you can probably get your money back pretty easy.

Good info on the tires, thanks! Yeah, I live at 5400' and anything I do for fun just goes up higher, so I already have to down shift into 4th on pretty much any incline just to maintain speed, and 3rd if I want to accelerate, and that's with 31's, so I'm a little worried about it. I do plan on adding a good amount of power, but still a ways off. I would really like to get some 285's but they don't come up that often. There is a lightly used set of the exact tire I want to run currently available in my area for $600, but I don't have that coin right now.

Just out of curiosity, what is your elevation? I'm in Albuquerque, NM and NA vehicles get killed up here, and like I mentioned above, I regularly go well above my base elevation of 5400'. 10,000+ is really pretty common for me during the snowboarding season, and 8k during camping season. I'm going to get it up to about 350hp, but that's down the road a bit.

I'm at water level. Thank god we are inland a bit because every 5 years or so the people right in front of us get logs knocking in their door lol.
