3.73, 3.91, or 4.10's?
Hey all, newbie here so sorry if its a dumb question. i know there are alot of threads on this already but i want specific recommendations for my situation. I have a 2002 F150XLT with the 4.6L and 3.31 gears. I just bought 285/75/16 (33's) and now my truck is a total dog, getting about 10-11 mpg's when i was getting 17-18hwy with my stock 29"s. I've already come to the conclusion that gears are the way to go, not reprogramming, BUT.... idk whether to go 3.73 which if im doing the math right will be the exact ratio to put me back at stock, 3.91's to get a bit more umph without sacrificing to much milage or 4.10's to have more power? It will be a mostly-freeway truck with the occasional desert trip as a beginner pre-runner just for messing in the dirt. Anyone have experience with any of these ratios with these tires? i dont want to get under 15 mpg hwy with whatever i decide and i wont be towing anything as thats what our F350 is for : Any help or suggestions would be much appriciated, Thanks.

I have the 4.6 3:55 with 285s an while its not bad at all, ill prob slap some 4:10s sooner or later because im about to start towing alot. If youre guna shell out the money for a gear swap, might as well do 4:10s but i wouldnt go any lower than that for 33s. Your town milage will go up but hwy will go down

Yes, you can fit 33's!
I'm runnin the same setup, 3.31's and 285/75/16's one question you need to ask yourself is will you ever go bigger than 33's? I'm plannin on swappin for 4.56's this winter with the 33's for the simple fact I'll be goin with 35's in the near future.

Thanks for replying.
@greenheadkiller: thats why i was thinking the 3.91's as kinda of a happy medium for power/efficiency because i drive mostly hwy.
@Danruff: what kind of programmer did you get?
@Southernsteel: i dont plan on going bigger, if anything i might go smaller next time i need tires. They are a little heavy for my little 4.6

@Danruf: ok cool ill look into that thanks. Is it a pretty straight forward device?
@ Almighty: they're actually 3.90's .....Summit Racing carries them; made by Motive Gear. Or I have a shop that specializes in diffs and axels who quoted me 750 parts + labor for a Ford 8.8 diff with a 3.90 swap.
Every one seems to be going 4.10 in my poll but it needs to be a good highway truck so thats what keeps steering me away from them. No one seems to justify why 4.10s other than more power which is number 2 on my priority list. I WANT MY MPG!!!
