2002 F150 4.6L Engine Pull Help!
This is my first post so hello to everyone.
Last week I was driving my F150 and while accelerating from a stop light I heard a big POP. Panic set in but I soon realized the vehicle seemed to be running ok, just very loud as if the exhaust split at the head. Once i arrived at a shop it turned out the spark plug closest to the firewall blew out of the head. When trying to install a new one the shop notified me that the plug inlet was stripped. They told me a Heli Coil is a good option except for the fact that the position of the plug inlet is under the firewall so the motor would have to be pulled. I was quoted $1500.00 for the removal and reinstallation of the motor and $6.00 for the parts.
My question to all you F150 guru's is
1. Does what i been told sound reasonable or am i being lied to.
2. If the engine pull is a must what other work would I want to do to the motor to give it more performance and a longer life.
3. Can anyone here recommend a good trustworthy mechanic in the San Diego or Las Vegas areas with reliable F150 experience.
If I must pull the motor I am willing to spend an additional 1000.00 or so on upgrades because I cant bare the thought of 1500.00 in labor and $6.00 for a Heli Coil.
Motor has 93000 miles with a true dual stainless exhaust and a K&N intake.
As you all can pretty much tell from this post I am not a mechanic and know very little about dealing with these types of issues, so any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Sin

Well I just had a head gasket blow out of my engine. I've got the same engine except mines a 98'. 85k miles though. To replace the gasket it's $1600. Haven't gotten the bill yet but that's what they said. I had a bid for $2500 at Car-X but I knew I could find cheaper and I did. So $1500 is about right. I was told by the mechanic I brought it to that these engines arn't fun to work on because they're tucked into the cab so it's hard to get at them. Not to sure about about upgrades, good question though.
