Seriously though, what's wrong with swapping in a junkyard FX4 housing with the 3.73 and limited slip? Even an Expy will have the 9.75 LS with 3.73... Same width, just hafta weld on perches

For the $$ it's waaay more cost effective, unless your heavy wheelin, draggin or braggin...

Personally, to me, an 8.8 is a mustang rear, not a truck rear... I wouldn't waste my time building it for a truck...
The 9.75 is comparable to the famous Dana 60 rear in almost all aspects...
You know I think I'm going to do this cause my truck is 2WD anyways and it's just going to be for cruising around and wasting rubber haha. Just out of curiousity...if I wanted to put a locker into a 9.75 would I have to go through all of the process again or would it be a breeze? <----Maybe a dumb question but I honestly don't know. Also I'm not looking to spend 1200 bucks on the rear end like I might have just ended up doing had I not asked. And for a street application there isn't going to be a bit of difference between an LS or a Locker is there? I like sliding when I can get away with it so will an LS do that?

And the reason I said I didn't want LS is cause I wasn't planning on doing an axle swap until you convinced me otherwise about 10 minutes ago haha.

You should be able to get the locker for the 9.75 and install the ring gear and bearings on it, set backlash and go... Still a pretty good job but not as bad unless you get a bad pattern for some reason and have to shim for depth... unlikely but things happen...

What's the chance you could explain backlash to me or is it something I will be able to do with basic mechanical know how?

Backlash is the amount of free play between the ring and pinion while moving the carrier in the forward and reverse motion...

This free play between the drive and coast side of the ring gear contacting the pinion should be .008"-.010"

Furthermore I should add that you will need a dial indicator that measures to .001" to set backlash...

Once you set carrier preload, you move a shim from one side to the other to loosen or tighten backlash
