2002 f150 373 gears
I have a 2002 f150 extended cab 4.6l automatic. What kind of gears does it come with stock in the rear end? I want to put a detroit locker(DO NOT WANT LIMITED SLIP) and 373 gears. Any problems with this? I've never worked on anything like this so give me all the details you can!

If you read, he WANTS 3.73s... He wants a Detroit locker, NOT a limited slip carrier, he never said he had a limited slip diff...
Judging by what he's said so far he has an 8.8 with an open diff most likely in a 3.55 ratio...

But since you don't wasn't a limited slip diff...
Buy the gear set and master install kit, $280.00 for a good set...
Locker, $500.00 ish
Then about $600.00 for the install...
Or perform the labor yourself if you have the right tools and can measure to the .001" and can follow torque patterns and torque specs etc...
Pull wheels, brakes, rotors
Diff cover, carrier center pin
Push in axles and remove c-clips
Remove axles
Remove carrier bearing caps
Remove carrier
Remove drive shaft
Remove pinion nut
Drive pinion out with a drift pin
Drive out pinion bearing races
Install new races
make a setup bearing
Install pinion with proper shims and setup bearing with no crush sleeve at 15-19 inlbs
Install ring gear on locker
press bearings on Locker
Install locker
Set backlash .008"-.010"
Check mesh pattern
If it's all correct (not likely) tear it down and install with the permanent pinion bearing and a crush sleeve...
If not tear it down and re shim accordingly reinstall and check again...
I've done the installs on the 8.8 and 9.75... It's time consuming and you need to know what you're doing, if you wing it you can and will grenade your differential, end up with noise or howling, this is precision work... Most would think you can get it close enough...
The gears are precision machined for a reason, they don't just slop together... they are precision installed

Your cheapest scenario would be to pull a 9.75 from an 02+ FX4 or an expy and swap it in for the stronger rear and a limited slip with 3.73 $200.00 for the axle and a few hours for install...
