2001 Super Crew Trans/Transfer Case Problems
First let me say, I have found a lot of useful info on this site over the years and I hate that this has to be my first post. Any help is greatly appreciated!
I have been daily driving a 2001 Ford F150 Super Crew Cab for a couple of months now with no issues whatsoever, until today. Out of the blue with no warning or symptoms, I was driving on the highway and it felt like it popped out of gear, kind of like I hit the gear shifter into neutral. It wouldn't shift at all, it was just rolling. I tried putting into neutral and back into drive and when I did the speedo jumped up to around 80mph (was probably doing 40mph) and the rpms where also high, and wasn't pressing the gas pedal. I pulled over and my initial thought was, I blew the rear end. That checked out fine (so far). Got back in put it back into drive and it took off, went though all the gears fine, and all of sudden I hear a clunk, and goes back to doing the same, but this time its done for. Will not move at all. I did notice when sitting and I put it in drive the speedo and the rpm's acts like it has a broken axle, if I give it gas the mph's increase, still no movement.
If I turn the truck off, and move the switch to 4lo or high and turn it back on it will most likely engage, but feels like its stuck in 4lo
4x4 was functioning before this incident
I'm pretty confident it's not the rear axle, I will open it up in the morning just be 100%
There was no slipping of the trans, when it was shifting, fluid looks good, don't smell burnt
It has the 5.4 motor, 4x4, and automatic.
This old thread I found is describing everything I'm going through down to the T, including the grinding when putting back into park.

Failed magnetic drum inside the Transfercase. It cant stay locked in 2wd. Its stuck flaoting between 2hi and 4hi. Check the 4wd fuse. Along with disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes. If it goes back to normal you need to have the front windshield resealed along replacement of the GEM. If it doesnt go back to working normal you probably need a new Tcase.

Yes I'm fully stopped when I try shift. When I do get it to move there is a whinging, it feels like its in 4wd lo, and there is a big clunk and then it goes back to being neutralized.

So after much investigating and research I am going to change the transfer case. It's just that all hands point to it being the transfer case. I disconnected the battery and nothing, I opened up the diff and that looks good, dropped the pan on the trans and that also looked normal.
The binding up of the trans when I move it from drive to reverse or park (while its neutralized) and the speedo and rpm working like if I was going down the road is one of the reasons I think its the tcase
The other reason is when I do get it to move I can hear the transfer case whining and it feels like its stuck in 4lo and I get a big clunk when I hit 50 mph and it goes back to being neutralized
Hopefully I'm making the right decision, I will find out tomorrow. I found a T-case for $160 with a 90 day warranty, and will be installing it tomorrow.
