2001 F150 Fuel system issues
#11
I just checked and my 2001 does not have the FPDM (or at least it's not mounted on the cross-member as described for 2004 & newer models. Is it somewhere else? I also checked and it's not throwing any codes.
Question: how do fuel pumps typically fail? I really hesitate to replace the pump when it obviously works since I can still drive it. But I've never had a fuel pump fail, so is this erratic no start issue just a symptom of a dying fuel pump? And why would a fuel pump be sensitive to cold? For that matter, can a relay be sensitive to cold? What possible issues could be weather/cold -related?

Dang, my truck is back to not starting. It's been 1+ day and nothing, not even the fuel pump hum. I've read of people having this problem and some have replaced fuel pumps (to the tune of $500-800) and it hasn't fixed the problem. So I'm leery of just replacing it. Anyone have any other thoughts before I throw $ at it and get a new fuel pump?
thanks

Just check power and ground down at the pump when you can't hear the pump running. If you have power and ground the pump is junk. The fuel pump connector is easy to get to. The two bigger gauge wires are the ones to the pump. You can get just the pump on these trucks. Some disassembly of the fuel pump hanger but real simple for the price difference. The new style '04 trucks got the fpdm that corrode away. Since most of the trucks still run. I would change out the pump. The fuel tank doesn't need to come out to change the pump. Just drop it far enough to access the bolts and lines. It's a real simple job and not cost $500-900. $200 at the most, if you do it yourself.

If you fuel pump runs sometimes just fine, I would check all the electrical connections first before going with a new fuel pump. Especially the connection at the fuel tank. It has been my experience that the fuel pump either starts loosing pressure or just flat out stops working when it goes bad. I am sure if you take it in, they will put in a new fuel pump and plug it into a clean connections at the fuel pump and all will be well. It may be that all you need done is to clean that connection which is a real low cost and easy job to complete.

I just joined this thread. My first post couldn't figure out how to post so I just replied. Can someone tell me how to post. I tested the pressure in my 2001 Ford F150 supercrew and need to know next step. Is there a Fuel Pump Control Module on this year model to check?

same problem
im having the same problems, since it turned off cold ive been having the intermittent starting problems. i went out to try and start it yesterday the highs where in the upper teens the first couple trys i heard the pump kick in but it didnt start, the 3rd time i tried to start it the fuel pump didnt kick in. i went out today and tried to start in and nothing, still no fuel pump kicking in. what other possible causes could do this, i was told to check the fuel pump fuse and the it could be the fuel pressure regulator.
