Question 2001 F150 Fuel system issues

I have a 2001 Ford F150 Supercrew 4WD 5.4 V8. Sometimes at start up it won't Start when this happens I have noticed the fuel pump doesen't hum when the key is first turned on. I have swapped the relays inside the truck under the dash rotating it with the other ones like it to see if the problem moves and it didn't. I have also replaced the fuel filter. I have tried the spare set of keys with no luck. If I keep turning the key off and on eventually the pump will hum and the truck will start right up and run with no issues. Sometimes it will go weeks without having this issue and suddenly it will do it twice in the same day. It does appear to happen more often when the weather is cold. Also I stopped by Autozone and had the codes pulled and the only thing they said it had was a bank 1 and 2 02 sensor faults. Please help the next thing I know to try is changing the fuel pump.
Thanks for your Help Jason

It could have something to do with the PATS key system. If am not mistaken I believe if the pats system does not recognize the chip in your key it disables the fuel pump. While your keys may be in good condition something might be going wrong with the sensor that recognizes the chip in the key. Just an alternate possibility.

I agree with bigred. The only other thing I can think of is an intermittent problem with your ignition switch. When you are having trouble starting it do you notice if the instruments and lights spring into action when you turn it to RUN? If they stay blank and are unresponsive at the same time then you probably have a problem with the ignition switch itself.

Default 1405 code Please Help

I looked when it wouldnt start yesterday the theft light was not blinking. I have replaced the Fuel Pump relay and this seemed to make the pump start at key on everytime. I also had the codes pulled again and now its getting a 1405 code and no other codes. But this morning it started fine i stoped by the store and turned it off and when i tried to start it back up it ran rough then went dead like it was starving for fuel and after a few tries it started and ran good. This truck is driving me crazy!

Me too, same problem. I've replaced the fuel filter since it hadn't been done in the 4 yrs I've owned the truck. Didn't change anything. Definitely seems to be worse when it's cold. Once I hear the fuel pump I know it will start, might take a few tries but eventually it starts. Possible causes I've thought of:
- bad fuel pump (but isn't the pump OK if it ultimately runs?)
- bad relay
- dirty fuel injectors
- spark plugs
- key problem

Maybe it's a combination, because the fuel pump does not always come on when you turn the key which sounds like could be the key/chip problem, but that doesn't explain why it is sensitive to cold?? I dunno, but I'm pretty frustrated and I don't want to take it to the shop and pay for them to go on a witch hunt.

Any ideas?

I just had this problem happen to me. Only thing was finally the truck wouldnt start anymore. towed it to ford, and they found the fuel pump to be bad. $900 repair with a new fuel filter. should be out of the shop today. temp outside was 27'f. I also found on this other forum a possible problem listed with a part called a "fuel pump driver module". Its a electronic board enclosed in a plastic weatherproof case located above the spare tire. Cost is around $100.00

Default thanks!

That's great info, thanks. I didn't even know about this. Funny thing is I had a flat 2 nights ago so my spare is already off!

Default Also having the same starting issues

Should I try using a spare set of key(s) ? Or just bite the bullet and swap out the fuel pump and or module.. ?

Your thoughts..

Default Do I not have FPDM?

I have a 2001... I've read elsewhere that my truck does not have an FPDM... is that true? (I haven't been able to go look yet)... if not, then what gizmo would do the same fuel pressure control function as an FPDM? And where is it and could it be bad? I was excited that all I'd need to do is replace the FPDM.
