Default 2001 f150 bad tranny or torque converter?

I have a 2001 ford f150 4x4 5.4l truck with the 4r70w tranny. the problem started one day when I was getting on the freeway i gave it a lot of gas to get on the freeway and when it shifted up it made a squealing sound. the the next day I noticed it took a second to go in drive when I first took of but after that it shifted fine. Then after that when I first started it the same thing but a little longer to go but when I gave it a little gas it would go into gear a little quicker. almost like a clutch and again shifts fine after that. I dropped the pan and changed the fluid and filter and did no good. Im just wondering if its the torque converter or the tranny hopefully the converter they want 2000 to do the tranny job. Ive pulled both off. just wandering if theres a way you could tell which one is bad. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a valve body problem not the torque convertor.

The key is in the old tranny fluid.
If the old fluid and filter was clean without pieces of metal or shavings, it is most likely not the mechanical parts inside the transmission.
That is what the Ford dealership uses to determine what is going on inside the transmission without tearing it apart.

The tranny fluid was clean no metal shavings or anything the magnet had some grey gunk but they all do right? on the magnet. I hope its not the tranny.

Is it hard to rebuild these trannys? Even with a book and a parts list?

this tranny is kinda hard to rebuild bc it is not a normal style tranny ,this its something called ravigneaux type gearset tranny and it is alot more difficult to rebuild then normal but not impossible with a good manual and the proper tools... but as far as what is wrong with your truck ..i can say this i doubt its the torque converter bc then you would be affected at all speeds ..all a torque converter is , is a liquid conection between the engine and tranny that allows you to idle when you car is in gear so if thats bad you will know it bc there will be problems at all speeds

so I got the tranny apart all internals looked good. accept the forward clutch pack seal had a little peice torn off. replaced all seals clutches and all that. put back together and it goes in gear fine but does not build enough pressure to pull up even the slightest of a hill. it revs up but barely goes. Im thinking the valve body needs rebuilt? you guys think? my kit came with the checkballs and rubbers seals for it i should have went ahead and done it just to be sure any info will help. it just feels to me like the fluid in the tranny is not pumping enough
