2001 F150 5.4L problems
My dad has a 2001 F150 with the 5.4L engine. The truck only has 142K on it. He is now running into a problem and need help finding his problem. When he starts the truck has has to give it gas or else it won't start. While it is idle he has to have his foot on accelerator or else it dies... Its almost as if this truck has a carb. As he drives down the road sometimes it acts as if he is about to run out of fuel.. even when he fills the tank up. Anyone know of what could be causing this?? Anyone else ever experience this problem with their f150?? All help is greatly appreciated

Thanks for the response. Correct me if i'm wrong on this...If it was the fuel pump..Then wouldn't it hesitate to stay running even when the accelerator was pressed??? It almost seems that it may be a sensor for the idle and fuel. When he started it up earlier today..the RPM's was much lower than normal on idle. He had to press the accelerator to bump it up to norma running RPM when cold and had to press accelerator to keep truck running. Thanks again

check the "idle air control valve" autozone should be able to test these. i was having a similar problem but it is just intermittent right now. older fords are notrious for tthese thing going bad. I used to work at a ford dealership back in the late 90's and early 2000's and can still tell you the part number of these

^^ X2 I had this exact same problem with my focus. It was the idle air control valve. I had a friend who had it happen to a friends mustang to. All the same symtoms. It was fairly inexpensive and easy to change.

Is your check engine light on? if so you may want to invest in a code reader they or not expensive and will come in handy down the road. I paid 50.00 for mine and have used it a few times now and saved myself a few bucks from taking it to a steelership.

with 142 miles on it it makes more sence to replace iac valve, check for fuel filter restriction.Iac valve will cause idle problems.as for it falling on its face make sure you have no vavuum leaks.pcv valve area.maf senor area.Ford base part for iac is 9F715,if fuel pump is original you may want to think about replacing it? its up too you....
