Default 5.4 random miss

I am new to the forum. I have a question concerning a random miss. My 5.4 appears to have a random miss, but I do not get any "Check Engine Lights" or engine codes. When it happens it is like the engine cuts out or misses one to three times and then clears up for a while or maybe even a couple of days depending on how far I am driving. We have checked the fuel pump and it is fine. A year and half ago when it was tuned up, the shop replaced 2 of the engine spark plug coils. Any suggestions of what my problem seems to be? I have already spent about $1000 trying to fine the problem this year.

I just had basically the same problem dude. I just got my truck worked on today and got 4 coils replaces in the #1 bank. My truck would skip at around 45-50 and then again at 65-70. Since I got this done there has been no more skipping. Hopefully this helps.

Thanks for the info. The pros seem to think that if it has anything to do with the engine, there will always be engine codes.

I didn't have one. I had my truck hooked up twice and didn't get a code at all. I had to take a mechanic with me in order to show him what it was doing.

You mentioned checking the fuel pump. This might seem like a dumb question, but did you consider the fuel filter? A partially clogged filter will cause your truck to be fuel starved intermittently under load or at higher speeds. How many miles has it been since the filter was changed? Always good to eliminate the cheap fixes first. Good luck.

That problem is a symptom of a bad COP. All you guys need to know this. The factory and motorcraft COP's are junk. Go to Jegs or Summit and buy the Accell rack of 8 for $200 and be done with it. I chased them around for three years and they DO NOT THROW CODES, I REPEAT THEY DO NOT THROW CODES! They will only throw a code if they are completely shot and the engine is steadily missing and won't stop missing. The once in a while miss is not going to throw a code. You can even bench test them with an ohm meter to the factory specs and they will test fine but will be bad and make the truck miss every once in a while.

To sum it all up if you have a random misfire every so often and have spend $1000.00 to dumb mechanics go get some aftermarket COP's and send me a six pack.
