Default 2000 F-150 4.6 to 5.4 and Dyno Tune *numbers*

Hi guys, just wanted to share my experiences having completed my 4.6 to 5.4 swap.

I got a motor that had been sitting in a warehouse since 1997 never used, it was a 5.4L with NPI heads and intake. I know I got a fantastic deal paying 275$ dont ask me how I found it lol. I had the NPI heads cleaned up at a machinist since the guy had done a home port job on only one head. They were cleaned up pretty nicely from what I could see.

I installed the motor over a weekend with a friend about 4 months ago, the swap went smoothly. One thing is I had to re-use the lower intake from the 4.6 since it was the only one I had. I understand some 5.4l have that electronic intake valve so I didint see a problem. I needed to get the Y-pipe re-worked to fit the new exhaust angle then later I installed a pypes violator catback system and JBA cat4ward heads. I got a K&N filter and enlarged my air intake inlet to 3". It drove decently on the stock computer but I knew I could benefit from a tune.

I brought my truck to Dasilva Racing in Pickering Ontario to have it tuned on the dyno. The stock tune got decent power and gas milage for being the wrong tune but ran bit lean at higher throttle. My baseline with the stock tune was 160 RWHP and 240RWTQ. After about 10 pulls on the dyno I ended up with the final numbers of 180RWHP and 285RWTQ.

To be honest I was expecting alot more given all the mods I have made but I think its important to note that I needed rear U joints and my diff is pretty sloppy. I know it would have been nice to fix all that first but I was worried I was running it lean and couldnt wait any longer. Please let me know guys if you guys think these are reasonable numbers for this truck and my mods. Thanks. Im attaching a bunch of picture of the build and the dyno sheet.

I was just walking to a guy today about swaping out for a 5.4L, did you use stock tranny, wire harness, etc. I"m not up on horse power but that sounds low to me. some one will let us know. Congats on the swap.

I used stock tranny and wiring harness. only thing I had to do was have exhaust cut and welded to fit and bought o2 sensors for the front with longer wiring. Ya seemed low to me seeing as the 1997 5.4 is rated at 260hp and 350tq at flywheel brand new stock.

that sounds about right. the 2V 5.4L is crap for volumetric effficiency. The NPI heads arent much better, you want performance? Comp 268H cams and headwork by Modular HeadShop. The '97 trucks had an HP rating of 235, not 260. So, your 180 mark is on the money. Also, you really didnt improve it much, a filter and exhaust is almost negligible, get it tuned, run a better MAF, and a higher stall convertor is you wnat it to be fast. Remember, weigh your tires, you have to take those into account.

The truck is also an automatic and from what I understand they lock it in third gear but are unable to floor it until 3000 rpms. not sure if that should affect my outlook on anything and furthermore I am running 91 octane under the advise of the tuner.

3rd is direct drive. there isnt much difference between the basic functions of a mod motor/4r70w truck and car. if its TUNED properly, its a non issue.
