Rebel,

I started writing last night, got nostalgic, deleted it all and just asked that.

I bought my first car at 13 for $50 from a neighbor. (Kids today can't do it and that's too bad.) Most kids had one. Couldn't drive on the roads, legally, but we could drive the logging roads and the abandoned train tracks. Man did we have fun. Anyway,

You're in a great spot if you're patient. Almost nothing you do to your truck that comes out of your wallet will equal or replace experience. A good winch will always get you home and snow chains will, with experience will get you farther then a 4x4 with an inexperienced driver. Of course you can't take the chains onto the road, but that's not why you'd have them anyway.

While you are getting the experience you can begin to prepare your truck to turn it into a real off road vehicle. That's not something that will kill you financially. You can also start collecting the parts you'll need to build a truck. In a couple of years you'll have the experience, buy yourself a new daily driver and start building a real off road vehicle. Along the way you will also gain the respect of the hard core off roaders. If you get a winch and learn how to use it you'll start getting that real soon.

Just something to think about and again, how serious are you about off roading? Off roading is a lot like surfing. It's as much a lifestyle as it is a sport or hobby.

About the winch? There are a lot of mounting choices and Warn makes some fine winches. There are probably a lot of you tube videos on winches and installations.

There are days where I wish you could still go and get somethin to for a couple of dollars. Its funny I actually only started this post after high centering my truck one night. I went over a hill to find swamps on the other side. I knew I wouldnt make through so I tried to go back over and thats where it happened. Took 3 hours of shoveling to get myself out.

I used to have a 1969 Ranger F100. Posi traction with mug grips and it would go where lots of 4x4s would not go. But then again it has a three on the tree. And when your in second gear spinning 70 MPH and your throwing dual rooster tails. That does push you through spots others try to idle and get stuck. LOL

I can't tell you what was available as OE from Ford, but I'm sure someone here can.
I know this is old but I am curious about something. Im actually selling my truck soon and buying a 2wd with open diff. What are the trade offs to a locker?
