1999 Ford F150 Lariat sometimes wont start
#11
I had the same problem with my truck. First check your connections and grounds to the battery make sure there is no acid build up and it is getting a solid connection. Also throw in some fuel injector cleaner in your fuel next time u fill up that might help.

I recently changed the battery in my 99 and same issue, only starts after I feed it some fuel thru the air cleaner. Then it starts fine as long as it doesn't sit more than a day or so. Seems I don't hear the fuel pump charging the line like I used to and like my wife's 95 exploder does. I'm not really mechanically inclined, so before I head off to hand out some $$$ I thought I'd see what I could find here.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Well, Knock on wood the truck has been working perfectly. As i had posted earlier i did have the fuel filter changed and the shop is going to keep it as "what not to let your filter look like" it happened a few times right after putting on the new filter but then has not happened again since that day.
I am going to put in some fuel injector cleaner next time i fill up the gas tank.
One thing i had tried when it was acting up to get it to start was to put the key in the "on" position but not start it up. after a few seconds turn it back to off and then again to on. I would do this 3 times in about 10 - 15 seconds and then i would try to start the truck and it would take right off. It would then run fine. I am told this is akin to "pumping" an old carberated vehicle.
Hope that helps, i will post in a few weeks (or sooner) if I have any other issues with this.
Thank You.

DjinnRutger, starting and not starting sounds more like the CPS (Crank), but priming the fuel system to get it to start does sound fuel related... If you had it at the dealer, and they couldn't get it to start, the first thing the mechanic should have reached for is the fuel pressure gauge... It is either spark or fuel missing!! If you have fuel, start looking into electronics... No fuel, the list of items just got considerably short!! Pump, filter, regulator or injectors (clogged after replacing the filter)... You should not have to "prime" the system to start your truck... Try starting it like normal and see if your issue returns... Throw a fuel pressure gauge on it if the problem returns... Oh, the clogged injectors should keep it from running right, but you can't identify this issue with good fuel pressure as it is after the fuel rail where the gauge is connected... Let us know what happens please...
Thanks and good luck!!
Cheers!!

Also, check/replace your PCM relay under the hood. If the truck loses communication with the PCM (due to a bad relay), you will have the same symptoms as you're describing: dashed odometer and crank but no start.

2000 F150 having the same identicle problem (160k miles). I am going to check the odometer display and the theft light flasing speed next time it wont start. I was leaning toward the fuel pump or the crank pos sensor. Hadn't considered the PCM relay. And will try the spare key.

Problem is getting worse. I checked the fuel pump with the door open so I could hear and it DOES prime every time. My odometer display shows all 8's in the start position. Not the -------- previously described.
Am leaning toward an crank position sensor, but want to know if the 4.6 has a cam position sensor that could also be the cause like the diesel engines have.
