Default 1999 f150 theft light flashing

I have a 1999 f150 that the theft light would flash and the truck not start after getting warm. after reading every thing I could and not getting a good answer ran some test of my own. warm the light would flash and the engine would turn over and not start. the odometer would have all dashes in it --------------, let the theft light flash for a few minutes I would get a code 16 flashing. tried a computer scanner and it would not hook to the computer. cleaned all the ground leads on the firewall and still would not start after heat up. forgot after the theft light would stop flashing the scanner would connect to the computer. decided I was losing voltage some where to the PCM, so changed the PCM relay under the hood, which it checked good with a ohm meter. the new relay the truck has not acted up for 2 days now. the dealer ship told me it was a bad PCM. plus they even told me to have new PAT's keys cut.

so far the relay seemed to be the problem. when it would fail i did not have 12 volts to some of the parts that should have it on the them with the key turned on. cold it would have the voltages.

hope this may help some one in the future. warm under a load the relay was bad. cold it worked just fine.

Usually when the odometer displays dashes ------ it means that the PCM is not getting power. You either left something disconnected or try the PCM power relay in the under hood fuse box. Try swapping it with the fuel pump relay temporarily and see if your odometer comes back.

Had the same issue with a 99...the theft light will flash quickly then briefly pause then flash quickly again...thats a code...mine was the code for a bad key.

See here...

Troubleshooting:

The engine does not start and LED remains off.Â*
1. Check PATS system fusesÂ*
2. If alarm is fitted check if LED functions for alarm: if not check cigar lighter fuse (also used for LED)Â*
3. If not go to main dealerÂ*

Engine does not start: LED flashes rapidly Leave ignition on until the LED starts to flash a 2 digit code: (sequence- pause-sequence)Â*
Check the following codes:Â*

Code flashes:Â*

1:3 Key code not received. Is key screened by other keys or objects? TryÂ*differentÂ*key: if okay then first key is faulty. If not go to main dealerÂ*

1:4 Partial code only received. Try again. If not okay usedifferent key. If not go to main dealerÂ*

1:5 Key not programmed into PATS. Program key as above using masterÂ*

1:6 Faulty link between PATS module and EECV Go to dealer .

My truck is fixed. it had the code 16 flashing on it. finally put a new PCM relay in it and all is well now.. code 16 is the pats system and ecm is not communicating with each other. ever where I looked for answers always said see the dealer. no one ever said what they had done to fix the problem. called the dealer and they wanted to put a new ECM and new keys in the truck for the 1st thing they wanted to do. they said it would be about 1,800.00 just to eliminate the 1st thing they wanted to do and still may not be 100% fix. that is why I put a 10.00 relay in the truck 1st to see if that was it since it was acting up only when warm..
anyway my problem is fixed for now. a fuse is not blown when it works some times and not others.

put a pcm relay in the box under the hood and see if that works. if the truck does not start because the theft light is on. just turn the key on and wait a few minutes then it will flash a code at the theft light position. I took mine to a shop also when it 1st started and all they did was put a scanner on the aldl connector to read the pcm codes. it does not show there. they had no idea what to look for and charged me for reading for codes. if you do not know where the relay is at you can find info for it on line. even the fuel pump relay can cause a no start. just verify what check engine light code flashes.
