I have a 1997 supercab F150 with 4.6l engine. The odometer has stopped working. Both the trip odometer and the total mileage do not work. The speedometer still works OK as far as I can tell. Is this odometer run by a cable or is it electrical? Any ideas of what the most likely problem is and what it will take to repair it?

Messed up have to post again. Welcome to the site. Use the search button for your fix. Punch in solder joints, real good how to about the fix. Its electrical and has defective solder joints. Good luck.

Mine is a cable and did the same thing. I took it to a spedo shop and a guy put new gears in it.cost 100 bucks. He said the gears in it are made out of rubber so the rot and fall apart and it could also come from reseting the trip meter while moving thats how I broke mine. The gears he put in it were hand made by him so i dont know if tat means you cant get them or he cat get them in hard plastic which is what he made his out of. He also would not let me watch him so whatever he did must be his secret.

When I talked to him on the phone he said thats what it was right away without even thinking about it. So im pretty sure thats whats wrong with yours

This is just to clear up any confusion Good old Bill is wrong and people posting stuff they don't know on here would have messed me up also. 97 and 98 had mechanical odometer and the rubber gear does go bad. It is a good thing I did extensive research other wise I would have been looking for a solder joint and wouldn't have found one. You can buy the gear on ebay for about $24. Ford doesn't sell them and from there you just pull you cluster out pull your cluster apart and find a small circular motor on the back upper left of the odometer portion. It twists out and on the end of it you will find the rubber gear broke in half. Put on the new one and you are set. Just did it today and it is working again.

I have a question about the ribbon cable that goes to a small circuit board at the top. Once I removed it and couldn't put it back. Did you leave it connected while replacing the gear? Or do you know a trick to insert the ribbon back into the socket?

I am responding to a Private Message that I just received from Sweed??? that I should take down my entry from 12-01-08. It seems my entry doesn't agree with how his 97 truck was made. I think you need to grow up! If you want to challenge me on any of my entries, bring it on. I've been wrong before and will be again. That's what research is for. My entry stays as is.

If you a referring to the ribbon cable that connects to the motor from the small circuit board it just unplugged for me. It had two little raised bumps to hold it in but a slight tug and it came right out and also went back in easily. You may have been able to leave it in but it was holding the two halves of the cluster together and made it much easier to get to the back of odometer motor to twist it out. I posted 3 pictures in my profile of how far apart I had the cluster in the one shot you can see the smaller circuit I think you are talking about. Hope you get it.
