01 f150 4.2 5speed
Thinking of buying 01 flairside 4x4 6cyl. 5 speed stick.Truck has 105k and body seems good.Dealer working to fix AC and the only other problem was that transfer case shifter was stuck in 2high.I have had several fords 99,02,03 but all were v8.I would appreciate any feedback on the 4.2 v6 and any heads up to check further on this truck before buying.(I made the dealer aware of the transfer case problem. Is this a huge deal or just lack of use?)Thank You from Maine

I have an 02 V6 2wd and it's so weak! If you are worried about the mpg's it's not that big of a difference with the 4.2 vs the 4.6. Other than that, the truck is sweet, still going strong at 98k. Oh and check the rotors, I get a terrible shudder when I brake.

will run you OVER
are you gettin it cuz its cheap and good mpgs? I think the v6 doesnt have enough power to pull anyhting heavy. and with the weight it has to lug around......IMO I would go with the bigger v8, even the 5.4. dont know what you drive like or what you use your truck for...

I find the 4.2/5-spd combo has adequate power. The automatic I wouldn't want to touch with this engine though. I pull a 4500lb trailer without too many complaints with mine.

I had an '09 4.2. It's a very good motor. Not too strong, but you'll have 4wd low for the boat ramp (if that's your bag). It does get better mileage than the 4.6. Mine got around 18 mpg mostly highway, but it was 2 wd. Mine had 182K on it when I sold it (for $3K). You'll notice a lack of torque when you climb a hill towing-or even unloaded. You'll use third gear a lot while towing.
