Camping
Look up the state parks. The ones that allow camping have no electric or water. That keeps the cost way down. It's back to basics but there is usually a restroom / shower available.

But I was also wondering if anyone knew of any random wooded areas where you could camp and not get in trouble with the law? Or is that impossible these days. I remember just going out and setting up deep in the woods as a kid and have a small fire with no issues.

Well my days of organizing car shows (Knotts Berry Farm Fabulous Fords Forever) are long past me. But...to organize a show and a meet it's usually best to set up a club, or New England F150 Club, since there isn't one already. This usually involves membership, dues, monthly meetings, election of officers...and then having some truck gatherings (Shows). Then if that's done you'll usually see some participation since club members have a monetary stake in the events. I belonged to 3 Mustang Clubs in CA, one of the largest in the Nation (Orange County Mustang Club) had over 500 car owners...Mustangs, Hot Rods, Mercury's, and various other Ford vehicles. We put on 2 - 3 Mustang events a year but since there are 20 or so Mustang Clubs in CA there was a Mustang Show sponsored by one of the Clubs about every 2 weeks. Fun times!!

Just posting up and agreeing on a meeting date, time and location like I used to do with fellow enthusiast of a particular make or model.
Better than having a group that collects dues/fee's and has sponsors and whatnot.
Nothing like a couple of peeps meeting up for food, drinks and/or activities over similar interests. Just a good way to stay social, learn and hang out.

I've belonged to my fair share of groups and clubs which is all well and fine, but I'm taking the easy route

But, with as many F150 trucks as I see on the road every day, with the meets, you'll eventually begin to recognize who's who in what F150. I had some very good friendships in my CA days and with my movements around the country over the years those friendships have fallen by the wayside. Military tends to have that effect. So if there's enough peeked interest in a meet (outside my busy schedule) sounds like it could be fun.
