Hey guys. I'm thinking about moving to NM and was researching some areas of ABQ and saw that Rio Rancho gets great and bad reviews depending on who you talk to. I see there's at least 4 guys here from RR (5 if you count the double post :p) and was wondering what your thoughts were on RR, ABQ and NM in general. I've read about the history of RR and why ABQ people don't like RR but is it really an issue?

I'd much rather have some property but internet access seems to be an issue going outside the city limits. I would need relatively fast internet service for work.

I know about the laid back attitudes there and that's a plus for me. I'm also more of an outdoor type of guy so that appeals to me as well. Housing seems dirt cheap compared to NJ/NYC area.

Also, I've read news sites and there seems to be a lot of gun related crimes and DWI/DUI accidents. Is it really as bad as it seems?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!!

I live in Rio Rancho and my wife and I really like it. So yea, if you read city-data forums there's always those that dislike RR (mostly ABQ folks) but it's all ones perspective. One thing we like is that it's less expensive as far as housing and property taxes. Oh yea, gas is more expensive in ABQ too.

We live on a 1/2 acre and our property taxes are $2300. You can't find anything like that that is affordable in ABQ. We also have internet access, digital phone and cable TV. You have a choice of Direct TV, Comcast, Cable One depending on where you are in Rio Rancho. I can remote log into work and it's like I'm sitting in front of my computer at work.

There is congestion at times for its size but nothing near what you get in ABQ. So I guess you can say that my wife and I enjoy living in RR.

As far as the "news" related stuff - it's no different than any other city - it's the media that is always making it sound worse than it is IMHO.

NM is a beautiful state - it does have 4 full seasons but probably less snow than what you get in NJ/NYC area . . . and when it does snow, they DON'T use salt on the roads

If you want to get an idea of housing on some property here's a link to our house (it's on the market)

Hope this helps.

Other than a few grumpy people, City-data was very positive about ABQ and RR in general. They compared it to NY/NJ.

Unless my source is wrong, gas is about the same as here in NJ (checked here on the map)

Someone pm'd me about Enchanted Hills and that seems like a nice place, far away from ABQ but still has good services (cable/internet).

I was reading a local news website and it seemed like there was a shooting at least once a week. We rarely get shooting around here (very strict gun laws) so it's huge news here if there's a crime with firearms. That and DWI's seem to come up a lot during my research.

I agree, NM is a beautiful state. That's why I'm thinking of moving there. I especially like the mild seasonal changes. When I lived in CA, I missed the fall and winter but when I moved back to NJ, it took about 3 yrs to adjust to the cold winters again.

I saw your listing when I was looking at homes in ABQ area. That's a beautiful place. Seeing houses like that for so cheap makes me want to move out there NOW. A house like that (minus the views) around here is easily 3 times the price.

Are you moving to a different part of the city or out of state?

Thanks for your input!!!

We live a little south of Enchanted Hills. That's one thing about RR. It has a mix of subdivision living as well as houses with property. Wife and I would still stay in RR on the southern end to be a little closer to work.

Folks alive and well still...lol?

Just thought I would pop in to say hello. Recently heard from another forum member who moved here, so a shout out to Superman750 too!

BobbyC; did you move here yet?

Anybody planning any fall trips? Going for a short trip to the Jemez for some firewood, but hopefully going make another run to southern CO soon.

I'm probably about 1-3 yrs out on my move, hopefully sooner than later. I was just doing some preliminary research on possible places to move and NM was on the top of the list.

Okay. I was raised here and then moved away for a bit; lived ib AZ, AK, CA and CO but eventualy came back home several years ago and love it. The multi-cultures and "New Mexican" food is tremendous, the International Balloon Festival is spectacular, but the Albuquerque high desert/mountain living is probably the best attribute. It is like combining Phoenix and Denver (on a much smaller scale); a mile-high City with moderate weather of both locations (not too hot or too cold) that has seasons. Of course, for truck enthusiasts it is also ideal as you have great desert, rock crawling, and mountain trailing areas all over the State.

Awesome. Are the effects of the last fire there still evident? I have not been down there in years/

The effects of all fires within the past decade are still evident. The fire locations from several years ago is where the forest looks the best and where you see the most wildlife. Most of the forest is terribly overgrown, unfortunately. The USFS very much needs to change its policies. Until they do the fires will be brutal when they come and the tree density will keep choking out the forage and soaking up the rainfall. Many of the springs have dried up or fallen off severely. The burn areas have springs that start flowing again or have increased volumes.
