I had my 2004 for nine years and 132k miles. No engine issues at all. I did religiously change the oil every 3k and did all the filter and fluid changes at the recommended intervals. I never knew there were even 5.4 issues until I joined this forum. Edit: forgot to mention, changing the plugs at the recommended 100k was a royal PITA.

I bought my '04 5.4 used with 175000km (109000mi) on it. It had a minor tick when I bought it that I figured was just the phasers, but the owner must've loaded the engine up with Mystery Oil and 15w40, because after I changed it out it started running like ****. I've replaced all the timing components and still get a hot idle knock. Now my exhaust manifolds are leaking and I'm pretty sure my cats are destroyed from the COPs misfiring.

I've always owned Fords but this will likely be my last one. If someone offered to take it off my hands in exchange for a GM I'd take it before you could say "sucker".

Just bought an '04 5.4L Screw about a month ago. So far pretty happy with it not as much get up and go as I thought it would've had but definitely does the job towing whatever I need. Getting the driveline clunk issue worked out today and possibly the throttle body and MAF cleaned but nothing major for a truck with 128xxx miles. Used to think I wanted a chevy but once I got the Ford I'm hooked!

I just bought a super nice 2006 F150 with the 5.4l.
The truck only has 29850 miles on it and never seen snow.
To early to tell if I like the 5.4 yet.
I have read the horror stories about cam phasers and two piece spark plugs.
My previous truck was a 2001 Silverado with the 5.3l and speed wise it`s faster. My 1988 5.7l Silverado would out pull the 5.3l.
My 5.4L Ford feels like a super strong engine at low speed much like the old 5.7 Chevy. The 5.3 GM is faster at high RPM.
I think I`m going to really like my Ford and like the 5.4L.
Have to remember that there`s millions of these engines out there many with high mileage. The Ford body and interior is by far nicer than the Chevrolets I`ve owned. I liked the Chevy trucks very much. they are a good truck. I once had a 93 Ford with the 302 that I hated. I also had a 1980 Ford with the 300 six that I loved. My 1988 Chevy with the 5.7 was 10X the truck the 93 Ford 5.0L was. Ford built their 1980 truck right up till 1996. They could never get away with that today. Love my 2006 F150.

Bought my truck not knowing about the 5.4l "problems", but like an intelligent person I bought the extended warranty for my truck. So far about $7,000 worth of repairs has been done to the truck and I've been without it for a total of about 2 months since I bought it last november. Now there's a loud ticking from both sides that sounds like valvetrain on one side and like one of the new phasers has already gone bad on the other.

I have no idea why I still love this truck. There's zero logical explanation for it. It's probably the worst monetary investment I've ever made, and yet I can't help but want to dump more money into it to make it better. Kind of like a boat that drives on land.

Also thank god for extended warranties.

I love my truck, it moved my girlfriend and I 1800km to our new house in Thunder Bay pulling my 6x12 trailer fully loaded and the bed full of my tool box and snowblower. I averaged 12MPG on the way here which I couldn't have asked to get any better driving with OD off the entire time.

The engine has 245k km with no issues, but the transmission went out at 200k. Other than that I can't complain about the truck.

Would I buy another? Of course, truck has served me well and I now use it for my part time business and it just keeps going.
