worthwhile mpg improving modifications

21mpg would be a dream!
Honestly, don't mod your truck with a lift, bigger more agressive tires. Keep it stock. I've done all the basic mods and I really don't think anything improved much. Well, maybe the programmer helped a little.

Wow, digging up an old post back from 2010. The search does work!
Any tuner could help, but most buy tuners to increase performance, and that increases the size of the right foot, which decreases fuel economy.

I do agree with the best way to get good MPG's is to keep tires properly inflated, do oil changes and tire rotations regularly. Take our un-needed crap from the truck, and easy on the gas pedel (65-67mph works best). Just by doing that along I got around 20.5mpg hwy with my 5.4L Scab 4x4. Going with the exhaust and intake I could easily achieve 22mpg or better hwy if it was flatlands. City driving really comes down to easy off the line and coasting up to the line when you can.

I just picked up a 1998 F-150 XLT Reg cab, 4x4, 4.6L V8($4950) (124K miles) on 19 Jan 2013. On my 1st tank, I got 10mpg. Some of that was heavy footed, heck, I just got the truck! Majority of the time I keep the RPM's WAY down. Takes quite a distance to get up to the 55mph between my house and work (approx 8 miles straight shot) I had the tires balanced and alignment done (both we're way off), oil changed. I have picked up some new plug wires, motocraft plugs, cleaner/oil for the already installed K&N. I am wanting to get out and find some 1/0 wire to replace my stock power wire. Seafoamed my crankcase and transmission the other day as well. Haven't put any fuel additives in as of yet.
After I get my stuff installed, I will eye my mileage for a tank or two and repost my results. Aside from the few items I had done at a garage, I've put less than $200 into supplies for maintenance. Hopefully I can see a difference!

I run an 04 with the Edge tuner, Free flow, and a K&N Drop in filter. on the economy setting running 93 octane Im at 16-17 City/21-23 Highway... Better than my 3.0 ranger used to get... Tires are 265/70/17...

As much as folks tell you it aint worth while to get stuff to improve gas mileage CAIs can be worth it. I drove 3900 miles and was getting all the way up to 20mpg at some points. I have a 2006 4.6 and was hauling 2000 lbs above curb weight. Its all on smart driving.

Exactly. Someone here said "buy a Focus." Hah! Good point, though. You want the HP and the tow, you lose something in return. But let's say I get 13 mpg on my 2010 FX4. Would an intake upgrade make a difference at all? I might get a new truck in a year or two so it'll be good to think about the future and not spend everything on an older model.
