Default worthwhile mpg improving modifications

i am interested in whether it is wise to buy a : cold air intake; new exhaust; computer program ; air intake spacer... i am particularly interested in actual results from other 5.4 owners. i plan to keep the truck for another 100,000 miles so every mpg improvement will help. i definitely plan to get a jack rabbit full metal bed cover and all terrains to replace my metric but about 33'' mt's. thanks.

Better yet, buy a bicycle. No mod will improve your fuel economy better than emptying out the truck of all the junk, keeping tires inflated and aligned, and keeping it tuned and maintained. Oh yeah, drive like you're 80 years old.

Intakes, tuners, exhaust... all nice to have but not a difference maker. Forget the intake spacer, those are worthless, unless you're the one selling them.

Skip the bed cover if your getting it just for mpg. It takes 20years for the increase in mpg to pay off what you actually paid for the cover.

Ya, there are a couple things you can do, but it will take forever for the investment to pay back. I mean air intake, free flow exhaust, proper tune-up, bed cover, etc.

Actually made me laugh out loud!!
I said the same thing to my brother, I want better gas mileage. He said, "you didn't trade in a Chevy Cobalt on an F-150 for gas mileage." However, If I could get this beast to get 34 MPGs like the cobalt, I would love it.
From what I understand bro, a tuner is the best bang for your $$ for HP and MPGs. Don't have one yet. But, Sooooon.

I like my truck much better now that I quit worrying about MPG's.

Modding for mpgs is stupid.

FWIW: https://www.f150forum.com/f6/best-5-...x4/#post323703

Even if you took and halved the figure I put down for the efans + udp it would still take 25k miles or so to break even.

CAI, Exhaust and a tuner you'll prob gain 2-3mpg.. but maintance and keeping tires inflated and driving style is going to be the biggest concern.

I would say stay away from those mods if your just wanting MPG gain, you probably won't break even. BUT if you want HP also.. go for it.

You could do a Gotts mod to your stock intake, google it and it's not to hard to do.

Exhaust.. your choice.

Get a Gryphon from Bill at Powerhungryperformance. Your best bang for the buck. HP gain and MPG gain.. get a nice 87 oct economy tune.

Throttle Body Spacer = paper weight.

Ah... $250 for a 5.4 UDP and then piece together a E-fan from the junkyard.. CHEAP.

I forgot UDP and E-fans might give you a 1mpg gain.. little freed up HP too.
