Default Won't shift into overdrive

I own a 2004 F 150 Super crew ( not Heritage ) with 5.4 V8 4x4 and 4 sp auto trans . Today it decided not to go into overdive when i was going down the road .The engine would revup and if i would shut the overdrive off , the truck would go back into third gear and continue moving .Has anyone had this problem before?

Is the overdrive light, on the stalk, flashing? If there is a problem with the transmission, the computer will store the codes. Have it checked and post the codes. Someone here will be able to interpret them for you.

I`m sure you checked the fluid level ,the fliter is not clogged up and you have no leaks. Other than that that`s about all us mortals can do for the time being. Good luck.

I had the same thing happen to my 04 w/ 5.4 at about 32k. It was the overdrive band i believe. They had to pull the trans and replace it. Kept acting like it was going into neutral, but then turn o/d off and it was fine

I got my F 150 Back from the Ford dealer yesterday .I had to wait a week for the tranny mechanic to heal from an ailing back .They found a snap ring broke in the overdrive clutches and a part of the ring got into the valve body and wouldn't let it shift into overdrive
