Winter time driving, help, advice.....
Hello all,
I live in Indiana. I bought my first 2004 FX4 this summer. What would y'all recommend as far as how much weight to add to the bed for driving on snow/ice? My brother advised that I use sand (not salt) and at least 500#.

I would not go over 500lb's at first, and see how you like it. I have been running my SCREW with just my four summer rims and tires in the box, and a Leer tonneau. It has been quite reasonable so far, with no sideways instability, and only minor forward traction issues on ice while in 2wd. I do run studded snow tires, so they help significantly with traction.
I have barely 300lbs back there so far, and I will likley add another 150 when I put my tool/junk box in the back. I am just trying to figure out how best to secure it over the axle. The biggest thing is to keep the weight centered over the axle and between the fender wells. Outside that window, it begins to affect body roll and yaw, which can quickly counteract the positive effects of the weight.

I just loaded up sand in the back of my pickup to prevent folks slipping on the driveway which is iced over here.I loaded up to a half ton,shedded about 500LBS&kept the other 500LBS in the truckbed.I like the ride alot,very smooth.I dont see any reason why you should not do this,just be sure you stay within the specs to what the manufacturer says as to how much you can carry.My Truck is stable on the snow,regards,Pete
