is it completely not working or does it just read the wrong direction? The guy might have split the wire in the harness possibly. Or maybe its disconnected in the head liner but I don't actually know if there is a plug up there.

i was gone on vacation sorry for getting back so late....

the display where it should say NE or SW just shows -- instead, so I assume complete breakage and not recalibrating.

sadly that is probably the case, just thought there might be a quick reseating of a plug or a reset procedure I might be able to try before I picked up the phone.

The mirror appears to be getting power (as indicated by the dashes you see in the compass display). I'd think though that if the compass was out of calibration, it would indicate some direction (N, NE, S, SW, etc.) in its display. You'd then press a button and then drive in a circle to calibrate.

Did you check your owners manual?

Compass zone adjustment
1. Determine which magnetic zone you are in for your geographic location by referring to the zone map. (see bottom of this post)

2. Turn ignition to the ON position.

3. Start the engine.

4. Press the ODO reset button in the cluster, hold for six seconds and release. You will see that ZONE appears in the instrument cluster display.

5. Press and release the button until the desired zone number appears. Note: The range of zone values are from 01 to 15 and "wraps" back to 01.

6. When you get to the desired ZONE number, hold the button down to "lock in" the new value. The cluster display will return to the "normal" mode when the button has not been pressed for 6 seconds. Compass calibration adjustment Perform this adjustment in an open area free from steel structures and high voltage lines. For optimum calibration, turn off all electrical accessories (heater/air conditioning, wipers, etc.) and make sure all vehicle doors are shut.

1. Start the vehicle.

2. To enter the compass calibration mode, press and hold the button for greater than eight seconds. The display will then show CAL in the display window.

3. Drive the vehicle slowly (less than 3 mph [5 km/h]) in circles until CAL indicator turns off. As many as 5 complete circles may be required.

4. The compass is now calibrated.
