Default Will 4.88 gears fit

Im currently running 4.56s in my 8.8 rear end but I came across some 4.88s at a good price. I was thinking about swapping because im running 37s but its just an idea. I have heard that the 4.88s would not fit into the 8.8 rear end but they look almost identical to the 4.56s so why wouldnt they.

Anyone have any advice before I open the diff up and attempt the swap?

Thanks.

my guess would be that to many splines or teeth on the gear it self, you can go into 4.88 gears but you will have to replace more than just the pinion and gear, anotherwards replaceing your whole axle!I could be wrong though! So dont quote me on it. i have never heard of an f150 with 4.88 gears, sounds kinda dreamy especially if your looking into getting a new stall put in

every time u take a step down 2 lower gears, the pinion get smaller, therefore weaker.

yeah, I had a freind run 4.88's in a 10 bolt chevy with 38's and it seemed he had to regear after running it hard..... guess it depends on how extreme...... I run 4.88's in my early Bronco and 35's, but it's lighter and it also has a 9"

I've put 5.13's in an Explorer with a 8.8, never had a problem with it.

Ok that makes sense. So maybe I should stick with the 4.56s because on occasion I can be a little rough with my truck and I want it to last. Thanks alot.
