This is interesting to read. I have had CAI;'s on just about every truck i had owned ..one of the first things i installed along with the exhaust. My GMC had 180+k and never had a programmer on it. my 05 F250 had a CAI for the first 100k(till the warranty ran out) and then i added a Bulldog to it. and my my I have a new FX4 Eco that i am shopping around for CAI and Exhaust but not planning to add a programmer till the warranty runs out.. is this a Ecoboost thing?? or have i just been really lucky on the last 3 truck i have owned???

It's possible you had a MAP sensor and not a MAF sensor on your gmc.. But even so, if the MAF environment wasn't changed too drastically by the CAI, then the need for a tuner is less pressing.
The front 02 sensors on all your rides determine just how stoich the mixture will be. They are always trying to keep a 14.7 AFR so it's likely that the fuel trims were not to far off for the 02's to keep you running stoich, or at least close to it.
On the Eco I would ABSOLUTLEY run a tuner.. In fact, on all modern engines I would advise everybody to run a tuner for any mod besides a cat back exhaust..
Modern engines are all tuned to the leaner side due to EPA and CAFE regulations for better fuel Economy. This sounds good in theory, but real milage benefits are all going to show up with a well trained right foot, and SMART driving habits.. When boosting your Eco it's likely that your closed loop fuel trims are on the richer side when compared to open loop fuel trims. But I would not doubt that they are still on the leaner side with regards to engine health.
The reasoning for vehicles running on the leaner side with thinner oils is certainly not a huge benefit for longevity, but it's not the end if the world either.... . It does appease these government set standards, which are mandatory.

The manufacturers and marketing dept. have these things thought out very well. To be honest, they only want you driving the vehicle for around 3-5 years, and then they want you back on the lot, ready to consume again. This is a consumption based economy here in the states, and don't you forget it...
So the main point I'm trying to make here is that COMPETENT custom tuning is a very cost effective, and SMART choice for both modified, and unmodified vehicles.. For modified vehicles it's pretty much mandatory IMHO.

I just did some reading that the Summit brand COP's are made by Accel and re-branded. Seems to be quit a few Mustang guys who like the Summit brand COP's. At $179 a set of 8 shipped, they may be something to look at.

Any feedback yet 04whitefx4?

I have a tuner in mine but not a custom tune running a CAI for almost 6 months and haven't had a problem I've heard the 5.4 has the lean issue maybe that's why I haven't had a problem I have a 4.6

Cool and report back on the longevity. Although today I bought a set of Motorcraft COP's with 5K miles on them for $120, so I wont be in the market for COP's for a while!

I have my Rousch CAI for a year now without issue whatsoever, but then again I believe all CAI are not the same, I think if the MAF position of your CAI is the same as OEM you are fine.

I notice a pretty good difference in the truck today after I put them in and the intake it had a lot more pick up and seemed like it was turning them 35's a little easier
