Could be either immediate failure or an intermittent misfire/no start, etc.
The aluminum body of the FPDM corrodes and in many cases completely falls apart leaving the internal electronics exposed. Some moisture may cause it to short now and then before complete and final failure.
When you lower the spare tire. remove the 2 bolts and the wire harness so you can inspect the back side. If it is intact you may want to paint it with almost any kind of paint and then put some rubber of fiber spacers between the FPDM and the frame.
The paint and the isolation spacers will make it last much longer.
If it is corroded, replace. About $100+ local stores or $60 Amazon.

Ok, I'm about to order it. What is wrong with the Dorman, it has 5 start review on Amazon with 143 reviews? And $62 with free shipping.

Every Dorman part I've ever had has failed, on multiple vehicles. Terrible construction and early failure on every one.

Dorman products are cheaper than Ford and or other major brands. Some parts are crap. This part has very good ratings. Many have commented about good results.

If you are about to order, does that mean you have inspected and found it corroded?
If not, hold off until you inspect. Mine is still the original from September 2003. Looked like new when I inspected it. I put numerous coats of paint on it and made a fiber plate to go under is.

The research I have done has pointed to Dorman being pretty crappy EXCEPT their FPDM. The ratings on the Dorman FPDM are great compared to others. I replaced mine with the Dorman brand. Won't think twice about it.

Then maybe that is good, which is hard for me to say BECAUSE of all the other part replacements I had to do with their parts. I have two of their FPDMs because I accidentally bought two instead of one from Amazon, but I never put it on because their other parts started failing left and right.
