Why can't I turn the engine over by hand to set the timing?
I’m replacing the timing chains on a 2004 4.6L engine. I got the front cover off and took out the plugs so it will turn over easy when I set the timing. I go to set the crank to TDC with a socket on the crank bolt before removing the chains. I can only turn it over so much before it “hits” something and won’t turn any more. Same deal if I turn it the other way. Any ideas? It was running fine before except for the noisy chains. Picture shows right bank. Lot of space between chain and guide depending on which way I turn it.

Is it posible that when you turned it backwards the chain jumped a few teeth and now a piston is hitting a valve. I dont know if this engine is an interfeirance or a free wheeling designe if its an interfeirance desighne you will have to remove the cams to retime it
