Default 4x4 won't engage

When I start my truck my 4h and 4l lights come on. But when I switch my truck into 4h or 4l I hear a click under the hood but not the loud thunk. And the 4h and 4l lights are not on. Help please!!!!!

Did you put the truck into neutral before switching into 4L. It shouldn't matter for 4h though just a thought but I am sure you already new.
